California Penal Code Section 337a(1)-(6) covers illegal acts of bookmaking.  Bookmaking is generally associated with bookies or people who are not taking the legal steps to accept bets.  Generally, it is the act of accepting bets or wagers on sporting events; however, the statute also covers activities such as simply owning or renting a location where bookmaking is taking place.

Bookmaking can be charged as either a misdemeanor or a felony depending on the facts and circumstances of the case. If you are convicted of bookmaking, you may face a lengthy California state prison sentence and a fine of up to $5,000.
